"They say that I can move the mountains
And send them falling to the sea
They say that I can walk on water
If I would follow and believe
With faith like a child"
- 'Faith Like a Child' Jars of Clay
So many people ask me about yoga and how they can get started too. They tell me they are worried they can't do it. They're not flexible or bendy enough. "i can't turn my body into a pretzel!". That maybe they felt they were "too big" to do yoga. "people are going to stare at me, what if i look ridiculous?!" or maybe they think they don't have time...
But I can still remember the feelings i had before my first yoga class, and all of the above came into play for me. I was nervous, anxious, excited, and scared. What if i sucked? what if i couldn't do it? Enter Child's Pose (Balasana), one of the first postures (asanas) learned in one's practice. What a beautiful way to silence the ego, rest, and catch your breath. Better yet, it is actually encouraged! (and with my forehead on my mat, i couldn't see anyone looking at me, even if they were)
They say when trying something new you have nothing to lose, but i lost quite a bit that day. I lost fear. I lost the racing thoughts. I lost tension. I lost a little bit of that voice that says "you're not good enough". and with that i couldn't wait to take my next class.
I encourage you, if you are curious or want to check it out, DO! Do it NOW!
What do you have to lose?
